How to Hand Wash Silk

[DISCLAIMER: While I've done some research on this topic through reading blogs, magazine articles, and watching YouTube videos, I am by no means an expert and am simply sharing a method that has been successful for me.]

Today I'll be showing you how I hand wash my silk and other delicate clothing items. I just found this amazing Orla Kiely silk dress from a consignment shop for just under $20, so I figured I'd show you how I clean these clothing items at home instead of taking them to the dry cleaner.

Here is the dress before hand washing. Again, it was from a consignment shop so it was pre-worn and definitely needed some cleaning.

First of all, this dress is a silk/cotton blend, but I've successfully used this same method for 100% silk items, wool, and cashmere.

Notice it says "do not wash" and to "dry clean only." I'm going to show you how you can, in fact, wash items like these and avoid taking a trip to the dry cleaners.

First, you will need vinegar, Woolite (or some mild detergent), a large bowl or sink, and an iron (for later).

Fill up your bowl with cold water, about 3/4 cups of vinegar (which helps neutralize odors), and a few drops of Woolite.

Swirl the water around with your hands to create some bubbles.

Submerge your garment.

And swirl around gently to release any dirt. You do not need to do this vigorously. Remember, you're working with a delicate fabric so you want to be as gentle as possible. Leave your garment in the water for 10 minutes.

You may notice the water change color. This is either from the dirt being released or it could possibly be some dye, but don't worry! If it's a good quality piece of clothing, the colors will not run or fade and will still look good as new once finished.

After the time is up, take your garment out of the water and squeeze into a ball, continuing to squeeze as much water out as you can. Do not wring - squeezing is more gentle on the garment.

Refill the bowl with just water (no vinegar or detergent) and submerge your item once again. Swirl around for a few seconds to release any remaining detergent. Take it out and squeeze excess water again.

Lay your garment on a towel and reshape it.

Begin rolling the towel on one end.

Continue to roll while squeezing the towel as you go. This will help absorb excess water.

Roll until the garment is completely wrapped and give the towel a good squeeze to absorb any remaining excess water. Hang your garment in a dry area away from sunlight for about ten minutes.

Now, set your iron to the higher end of the wool/silk setting.

You'll want to iron your garment while it's still wet. YES, wet. I know that sounds super scary because it seems like you'll damage the silk, but this is actually a pretty important step in the process. If you wait for your garment to dry, the wrinkles will set and will be a lot more difficult to iron out. So ironing while wet will do two things - 1) dry the garment and 2) remove wrinkles at the same time. (Please note, if you're using this method for wool or cashmere, skip this step. Do not iron, but instead reshape the garment and lay flat to dry.)

Make sure to iron on the reverse side. It might take a few passes to get the garment completely dry and smooth, and that's ok. Here you can see on the left the dry smooth side, while on the right the dress is still wet and wrinkled. Continue to iron until your garment is dry.

And now you're finished!

Before

After
As you can see, the dress looks brand new, clean, and smooth. The silk is not damaged and the colors have not faded or bled.

I have used this method many times over the years, and my clothes come out looking brand new each time. It does save me quite a bit of money on dry cleaning, BUT it is time-consuming. This whole process took me about half an hour. So you do have to set aside time if you have several pieces you want to wash, but in the end, I think it's worth it because you're saving money and your clothes come out looking fresh and conditioned from the water/Woolite mixture.

Please feel free to leave me any questions in the comments below. I hope this article helped, and if you do end up giving this method a try, please let me know how it worked out :) Good luck!

Orla Kiely AW15 Etc: Giant Linear Stem in Apple

Orla Kiely has added on to this upcoming season's Giant Linear Stem collection with the new colorway Apple (see Liquorice and Nutmeg here). It's definitely an interesting color for the fall - it seems more spring/summer to me. I think I have enough Giant Linear Stem bags (for now!) and will probably sit this collection out and wait until they release a color I fall in love with (how about mint green?!)

Orla Kiely AW15 Etc: Tonal Stem in Storm and Foliage

The first of Orla Kiely's Autumn/Winter 2015 Etc collection is slowly making its debut on the UK/Worldwide site with the release of the Big Owl print, and now this Tonal Stem pint in the colorways Storm, a combination of grays and yellow, and Foliage, with shades of pink and green. This collection is made of 100% polyester with leather trims and is unlined, so these bags will be similar to the previous nylon collections (Buttercup Stem print, Flower Spot print, and Daisy Stem print).

The same styles are still available, although they tweaked the Backpack a bit and made the front pocket larger and the overall shape a bit more rectangular. The exterior leather pocket is gone as well, and replaced with Orla Kiely logos on the zipper pulls as mentioned in my previous Big Owl print post.

What do you think of the AW15 Etc collection so far? I absolutely LOVE the Big Owl print, but I'm admittedly not as excited about this Tonal Stem collection. I definitely prefer the coated canvas over the polyester/nylon materials. I'm excited to see what else Orla Kiely has in store for the Etc collection, as well as the mainline collection!

Orla Kiely Window Panels On Sale BUT...

The Orla Kiely window panels at Target are now 20% AND you can save an additional 10% off with code AUGUST10. If you buy two sets, this ends up being about the same deal as last week's buy one, get one 40% off sale. The 84" panels are on sale for $27.99 (originally $34.99) and the 94" panels are $34.39 (originally $42.99). Seems like a good time to buy, right? Well, hold on a sec...

I've been getting several emails/comments from people who have ordered the panels expecting to get two per set. Makes sense right? They're shown as a pair in the photos and Target's website specifically lists that there are two pieces included. However, everyone's been getting only ONE panel. Doesn't seem like such a good deal anymore, huh? Some folks have had good luck with customer service and are being sent additional panels at no extra cost, while others have been told that there's nothing that can be done except order another or return the one they have if they're not happy. It's quite frustrating how inconsistent Target is being! As of right now, Target's website still states that two pieces are included.

To keep things fair, I think Target should either 1) make sure all future orders include TWO panels and send extra panels to those who've already ordered and received only one, or 2) change the number of pieces to ONE and lower the price. Either way, Target needs to be more CONSISTENT with how these orders are being handled. It's not fair that some people have been promised the additional panel at the price they paid, while others are being told tough luck and to just return their one panel if they're unhappy. I was ready to order these panels myself, but now I'm not so sure and will probably wait a few days to hear how everyone's issues are being resolved. I have a friend from Instagram, Margo, who's been in contact with a Target supervisor and was told that they are currently filing an "item inaccuracy report" and will be contacted once a correction is made, whatever that means. I'll update you all once I found out more, but feel free to share your experiences with this issue in the comments below!

Orla Outfit of the Day: Cars

OOOTD:
Orla Kiely for Uniqlo Multi Car print shirt
Coach leather wedge sandals
J. Crew skinny belt

I'm off to a Thomas the Train-themed birthday party today. I know that my shirt does not have a train print, but I thought, "Hey, at least it's some mode of transportation." :)

These midi skirts are such a staple of mine now. I probably have about ten of them in different colors and prints. My favorites are the ones that button up the front, have belt loops, and have pockets!

Nail polish color: Revlon Coastal Surf - I figured this matched the Thomas the Train blue color quite nicely :)

This Multi Car print is probably one of my all-time favorite Orla Kiely patterns!

I love when my skirts have belts loops because I think belts are such a great accessory that can really accent or pull together a whole look. I also love to knot my belts at the end when they're a bit too long.

I hope everyone has an absolutely wonderful weekend!
